It's a new experience every day at the Austin Children's Museum. Join our Gallery Educators to further explore the ideas and concepts in our exhibits. Have fun learning through staff led science experiments, demonstrations, and creation activities. Discovery Times run three times daily and are included with admission. See upcoming topics.

Check out these fun activities that compliment the theme of our feature exhibit, All Systems Go. Topics rotate every day. Check the calendar to see what you'll be doing when you visit today!

Build a Hovercraft:  Experiment with energy and friction by building your own hovercraft out of household items!
Opposites Attract:  Explore the science behind magnetic attraction! Play a magnet game, move a car with magnets and more!
Pop-Fly:  How high can you launch a ping-pong ball into the air? Work with our Gallery Educators to build a simple machine that will send a ball flying high!
Catapults:  Learn the science and the fun behind catapults! Design your own and see how far you can launch a pom-pom!
Zip-Line:  Zip into fun, and see how fast you can get there! Explore friction and energy as you propel a balloon along a string!
Paper Flyers:  Do you love making paper airplanes? Learn how to make the coolest flyers, then send them into flight with our paper airplane launcher. Also, learn how to make other flying objects out of paper!
UV Bead Bracelets:  Learn about energy that comes from the sun and make a fun bracelet that changes color in UV rays!

Creation Station A la Carte - Create art and inventions using recycled objects.
Spin Art- Use a turning table to create unique artwork filled with circles and patterns.
Poly-Worms – Explore polymers with this wet and gooey experiment. You’ll get to make your own worm-like molecule strand.
Shrinky Dinks – Create a tiny treasure out of recycled plastic. This craft uses a polymer to make wearable plastic art.
Polymer Slime – Explore the properties of matter by creating a gooey polymer slime.
Insta-Snow- Explore the properties of matter with this special water absorbing polymer.
Penny Parachutes- What a drag! Explore the science concepts of parachutes by building a variety of chutes for a penny and comparing how they fly when dropped from our 2nd floor launch.
Chroma Buttons- Be a color detective and find out which colors combine to make your favorites. Once you’ve solved the mystery using chromatography, make a button to display your artistic results.
Box Guitar- Build a guitar that really rocks out of common materials. Learn how all the parts of the instrument work together to create sounds.
Kazoo Tubes- Make your own kazoo and discover how to alter sound with vibrations.
Sound Off – Learn how everyday objects can make unexpected sounds. Make laser-like sounds with a spring and hear balloons blast off.
Mystery Sounds- Explore a wide range of sounds with sound games, sound matching, and sound exploration. Create your own noise maker to take home.
Playing with Sound- Discover ways to create sound with simple objects like tubes and air or balloons and hardware. Explore ways to alter by using the museum walls, umbrellas and items from the Play it By Ear exhibit.
How we hear- Work with our Gallery Educators to build a simple model of an ear. Explore how animals that don’t have ears, like fish and snakes, hear.
Foley Effects- Explore story telling with sound effects. Work with our Gallery Educators to create a lively story with dramatic sound effects.
Membranophone- Make a clarinet like instrument and learn the science of how drums, kazoos and your membranophone create sound.
Double Reed Straws- Turn up the volume of your everyday drinking straw by transforming it into a double reed wind instrument.
